My Background

I have been a professional mental health counselor for 11 years, but have been fascinated with the human mind ever since I can remember. I knew I wanted to be a counselor as soon as I walked out of my first therapy session at age 16. I was amazed how dramatically my perspective and sense of clarity shifted over the course of a short hour spent being intently listened to by a stranger. The angsty, pessimistic teenager who entered that session, emerged from it feeling empowered, more self-confident, and actually excited to confront life's challenges and uncertainties. The simple act of talking through my thoughts and feelings with intent, in the presence of an engaged and accepting ear, had profoundly changed my life, and I could not imagine anything more rewarding than facilitating that experience for others.

My Counseling Philosophy

My counseling approach is minimalist, and informed primarily by gestalt, person-centered, and emotion-focused therapies. While I incorporate elements from other theories, I believe therapeutic progress is more a result of the quality of the relationship between counselor and client, and of their intentionality in the session (ie, what is being focused on and why), than it is of the counselor’s directives or elaborate interventions. Subsequently, I leave a lot of “space” (eg, therapeutic silence, minimal questions, limited self-disclosure, etc.) for the client, and generally direct the conversation as little as possible. I find this helps clients be more intentional with the topics they bring up, and it increases the chance that the most pertinent parts of the their presenting issue get addressed.

My biggest priority in session and the backbone to my approach is to always treat you, the client, with genuine compassion and unconditional respect, to present myself authentically, and to be as present as possible so I can thoroughly understand you and the perspective through which you view and relate to the world. I find that when adhered to, these principles have the near universal effect of helping clients express and understand themselves, be more self-aware, and address the issues most in need of exploration in order for change, acceptance, or both.

Clinical Focus

Most individuals I work with initially present with with anxiety and/or depressed mood, and more specifically, with issues involving grief/loss, trauma, identity/values, loneliness, relationships, self-esteem, boundaries, anger, neurodivergence (ADHD, ASD, etc.), assertiveness, bullying, sexuality/gender-identity, and self-doubt. I am an LGBTQIA+ affirming counselor and working with clients from that community is a particular passion of mine.
